And the winner is:

"The Wait" by Gayla Chaney.

"The Wait" narrowly edged out "Harold Doesn't Date Anymore" (By Dan Kopcow) by a score of 14 points to 12 points.  Third place, and honorable mention, goes to Russell Lutz's "Capture Urn".  Each and every story recieved at least one vote, and the following stories were authored by:

As The Raven Hunger - Paul Hughes
The Apprentice - Elena Clark
Invisible Enemy - Lawrence Dagstine
Dateline 2020: Retrospective Notes from the American Underground - Luke T.
Tunnel of Time - Roger Haller

I wanted to take a moment and recognize Elena Clark and Luke T.  I was completely blown away by The Apprentice and Dateline 2020.  And of course "Raven Hunger" by Paul, but with prose that good we pretty much all knew who wrote it, didn't we?

Thanks so much for writing such excellent stories, and there are certainly a couple here that could even be headed for an anthology near you.

Great story, Gayla! And congratulations.  You had me along with Krista for the ride.

Also, I have to commend Dan Kopcow on "Harold Doesn't Date Anymore" (P.S.: Dan, enjoyed "Gone English" in the recent issue of Theaker's Quarterly, too).

Harold Doesn't was a juicy, lovable tale...entertaining from start to finish.

Actually, I think I'm going to go nominate those two in the Best Of...

Congratulations to Gayla!

Mark: thanks for your good opinion of The Apprentice.  That story is part of a cycle I've been devoting most of my writing time and energy to for the past several years (making up languages has turned out to be a lot of work!), so I'm glad that shows through.

Thanks, Lawrence and Elena.  I am surprised and very pleased to have won.  My own family was for "Harold Doesn't Date Anymore."
My oldest son loved it and read it aloud to the whole family.  For days, the mere mention of a green Gremlin set everyone laughing again.  This was a great group of stories - and so varied!  The Silverthought writers continue to amaze me. - Gayla

Nice work Gayla,

Some great depth in your writing. Always a good read.
Congratulations to the other writers as well. Each piece was it's own resounding statement of Silverthought talent.

Congratulations to Gayla for winning the ST War contest.  She'll receive The Trinity and Chaise when they're finally ready for release.

And now it's time for me to pick a voter name from a hat.  That means photo essay!

This is the list of voters.  Disregard chickenscratch.  If I missed anyone, too bad.

And now the list has been snipped into bite-size segments.

For this drawing, I chose a bulldozer cap.  If Lykosis ever posted here anymore, she'd recognize it, but since she doesn't post here, she's a jerk.

We're getting closer now.  The names are IN THE HAT.

Oh lordy HERE WE GO.

And the winner is:

Elena!  So let me know what book you want.

Thanks to everyone who participated.  The quality of submissions this time around was impressive.  Gayla's piece will be featured in the next update.  And I don't usually do this, but given the quality of submissions, I'd like to invite everyone who wrote one of these shorts to send it in for the next update, which will probably be in two weeks.  Consider this a blanket acceptance (but feel free to make changes before submitting for the update--some of the pieces could use a wire brush).

Stay tuned for the next contest.

To the right, you should see a box with ten book covers in it: Ignition, Corporate Porn, Broken, The Perfect Revolution, Iota Cycle, Red Ivy Afternoon, Exposed!, A Dark and Deadly Valley, Chaise, and The Trinity.  Those are the current choices, even though The Trinity is in pre-order and Chaise is still being assembled.  Details for each available by clicking the cover.

In other news, I've received war contest submissions from Dan and Roger.  This is a reminder that if other participants would like their work to appear in the next update, send them my way.

Those of you who didn't send in your war contest entries for the last update can consider this an open invitation to do so for the next or any future update.

Just to sort of piggyback on Paul's post, we're also open to ideas for new fiction contests.  We usually do them about every other month or so, and we've got another coming up in a few weeks.  Anyone have any ideas for subject matter or rules?  This isn't really a democracy, but you could call us perhaps an "attentive oligarchy".

I actually second Roger's idea.  Supernatural SF.

Or, also, I don't think you've had a "Write your scariest horror" contest.  Or anything ghost story in general.

Why specify horror? Plenty of horror in the last contest. We haven't had a "write your hardest hard sf" contest either. One thing I've liked about most of the contests is that they allow writers to use whatever genre they want with a spec edge.

This reminds me of "On the Lot." The contestants always seemed to make comedy shorts. Then one week the theme was HORROR. And almost all made comedic horror shorts. And another week the theme was ACTION. And almost all made comedic action shorts. There's been a lot of supernatural and horror entries to the contests without us having to build a contest around a specific genre.

Well put, and my thoughts exactly.  Topical matter is better than genre.

Um, I realize it took me a while to answer, but I've been hiding out from the literary community while I was in Finland and (more importantly) while I was waiting to read Harry Potter 7.  But now I'm back from the 63rd parallel, I no longer have to lurk in a dark basement in order to use the internet, I was TOTALLY right about Snape, and I'm ready to ask for my book.  I want...decision, pressure, pressure...Ignition.

Hi.  I'm the asshole who missed this thread.  Elena, PM or email me your mailing address and I'll ship Ignition to you this week.

I have received Ignition and am eagerly reading it when I am not working through THE LIST for my comps.  So far it's much more entertaining than Sentamentalist poetry, but alas, it will never appear on any of my exams.
