Not Your Grandmother’s Murders
by Gregory Adams

A struggling writer imagines that stealing plots from obscure pulp writers will give his own stories the boost they need.

this short seems particularly.. topical, given recent events.  i'd recommend everyone read it; it's a fine piece.

This was clearly an excellent short story - (I take it some of it was also inspired from the plagiarism thread) - and I know what the author meant when it came to the pulp fiction paperbacks at some of those secondhand bookshops. (ala Donald Hamilton for example).

Also the twist with:

SPOILER ALERT:

"Mortal Coil Publishing" - I won't say no more, read the story.  It's also like there are a lot of hidden meanings and hints which leave the reader, the protagonist being a mystery writer, in a mystery him or herself as well.

But executed extremely well.  This is definitely the top story for this update.  I take it this is your very first story here, Gregory, welcome to Silverthought.

Lawrence

P.S.: great choice in putting this one up, Paul.

Thank you for the kind words, and the welcome.

I actually wrote this one a few years ago. My first inspiration was the notion that it is somehow easier and less noble to be Raymond Chandler than Raymond Carver. I might not have sent this story to Silverthought, however, had the plagiarism thread not resurrected the idea my mind.

The subject matter had me very aware of any time I considering how an author I admired might have approached certain scenes.  I listed those authors in my bio. I'm certain I could have listed a dozen more, and there must be others whom have influenced me but I cannot recall how. Hopefully, through their examples, I have created something all my own.

Hey man, welcome back.  ST is still a pretty rad place, and we pay for fiction now!  Paul has been knee deep in getting about four new books sent to print, so he's been sort of in and out, but the main core of people are still here.
