I liked the action in this piece with the SWATs, not to mention the title. I also liked the countdown segment (
six, five, four, three, two
...etc)
Four.
Garber got turned around in the middle area of the warehouse. He followed the continuing sounds of the SWAT teams who still were in the loading dock. Behind, Whitey's gunfire continued, adding to the structural collapse of the warehouse.
Three.
He found the doorway where Halo had stood…
Just curious, the name HALO... did you by chance get that from the video game HALO? It goes real well with this piece.

Garber called him Halo because the first time he saw him, he made a halo in the doorway. Just an internal mnemonic device that I thought was kind of fun.
I tend to do this kind of thing with horror -- which I write only about 1/10 of the time. I build a story which is totally in this world, then I sneak in the horror halfway through... or at the end. I think this might be a built in obstacle, since horror readers probably expect blood splatter on the first page of the story.
But it works for me, anyway.

Hey, any kind of horror --splatter or gore or not-- seems to have a very broad appeal nowadays.
