August-September Writing Contest: "Modify the Phase Variance, Carl"

Ladies and gentlemen, it's time once again for another Silverthought short fiction contest!

This contest will revolve around humor in the context of speculative fiction. It can be of the snarky, ironic, satirical, goofy, or downright gross variety, but if you want a chance to win, it had better be funny! There is no maximum or minimum length, but the usual biases against irritating narrative story formats apply, so if it's going to be super short or super long, make it worth the deviance. Subject matter isn't restricted by content other than the speculative outlook, and it was agreed on by the staff when discussing this contest that what we absolutely don't want to see were ten long jokes in story format with simple punchline endings. Let's stretch our literary muscles a bit here, guys! This is a great opportunity to broaden your scope if you write hard sci-fi, or to really shine if you like whimsical or sarcastic hilarity. The funnier the better.

The contest begins August 14th and will end on September 30th, which gives you all about 5-6 weeks to make it happen. The winner will be judged by the staff (the staff will not participate), and the prize will be guaranteed inclusion in an upcoming site update, bragging rights, and a shiny copy of Russell Lutz's upcoming book The Department of Off-World Affairs. Please send all entries to mark@vinniethevole.com. Winners will be announced on October 7th.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
